Below we review what metabolic syndrome is, what SSNHL is and what the study shows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Is Metabolic Syndrome?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of risk factors related to cardiovascular disease, including diabetes, heart disease and stroke. The risk factors include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Abdominal obesity. <\/strong>For women, this means having a waist circumference larger than 35 inches, and for men, it is larger than 40 inches.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>High blood pressure.<\/strong> This is a number greater than 130\/80.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Impaired blood fasting glucose.<\/strong> This refers to a level equal to or greater than 100 mg\/dL.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>High triglyceride levels.<\/strong> This is more than 150 mg\/dL.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Low HDL cholesterol.<\/strong> This is less than 50 mg\/dL for women and 40 mg\/dL for men.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Is Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss?<\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/soundadviceburbank.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Man-experiencing-sudden-hearing-loss.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1961\" width=\"374\" height=\"249\" srcset=\"https:\/\/soundadviceburbank.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Man-experiencing-sudden-hearing-loss.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/soundadviceburbank.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Man-experiencing-sudden-hearing-loss-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 374px) 100vw, 374px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>SSNHL, also known as sudden deafness, is a rapid <a href=\"https:\/\/soundadviceburbank.com\/hearing-loss\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/soundadviceburbank.com\/hearing-loss\/\">loss of hearing<\/a> caused by a problem with the inner ear. Most commonly, it only affects one ear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In some cases, people with SSNHL wake up in the morning and cannot hear. In other cases, people hear a &#8220;pop&#8221; sound when doing daily tasks like shopping at Vons in the Lakeside Shopping Center and then their hearing fades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>SSNHL is a medical emergency. If you experience it, seek medical care immediately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What the Study Shows<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/34325457\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">study<\/a>, entitled \u201cSudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss and Metabolic Syndrome: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis,\u201d was published in the journal <em>Otology &amp; Neurotology <\/em>in October 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The goal of the study was to examine the association between SSNHL and metabolic syndrome as well as the prognosis for people with the two conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The researchers examined data from three other studies on metabolic syndrome and SSNHL. The participant pool totaled 11,890 people, 3,034 of whom had SSNHL.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They found that those with metabolic syndrome had a significantly higher risk of SSNHL. In fact, the risk of metabolic syndrome among SSNHL patients had a pooled odds ratio of 1.88. Researchers also found that SSNHL patients with metabolic syndrome had much higher chances of poorer recovery.
