According to the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders, “About 28.8 million U.S. adults could benefit from using hearing aids.” If you’re among this population and you wear hearing aids, you may be wondering how you can extend their lifespan. We review tips for this below.
Clean Them Daily
The single most important thing you can do to extend your hearing aids’ lifespan is to make sure you clean them every single day. This process only takes about five minutes before you go to bed and can improve your daily listening as well. To do this, follow these steps:
- Wipe down your hearing aids with a soft, dry, clean cloth.
- Use a wax pick/wire loop to remove any stubborn debris.
- Open the battery doors and clean the contact ports.
- Leave the battery doors open overnight to help moisture evaporate and to extend battery life.
- Once a week, clean the tubing in warm water, then let them dry completely before reattaching them.
Keep Them Dry
Moisture is one of the biggest threats to the delicate technology within your hearing aids. When venturing out in the rain, make sure you wear a rain jacket with a hood or use an umbrella. When exercising, wear a sweatband. We also recommend investing in a dehumidifier from Crown Ace Hardware to store your devices at night to remove any residual moisture.
Store Them Properly
If you need to take your hearing aids out for any reason like if you’re going swimming or just taking them out for the night, it’s important to store them in their case rather than just throwing them in your bag or on a nightstand. This will prevent loss and damage.
