Many people have heard of tinnitus, and if you don’t know what it is, it’s a ringing or constant noise that you can hear, and usually no one else can. It can be tough to live with and many people seek treatment for it. There are some steps that you can take to avoid this condition and we are going to talk about them below.
Stop smoking
One of the things that you can do is to stop smoking. By smoking, you are blocking the blood from getting to your ears properly. Not only this, but you are putting a whole host of harmful chemicals into your body and this is going to cause you issues. It is thought that smokers are around 15 percent more likely to experience hearing loss or tinnitus in their lifetime. As such, smoking is something that you should avoid if you don’t want tinnitus.
Avoid loud noises
One of the best things that you can do is to stay away from loud noises. If you work in construction, make sure you are wearing the proper ear protection gear to avoid any damage to your hearing. Or, if you like going to concerts, make sure you take earplugs. You might not think it makes you very cool, but you aren’t going to be happy if you develop tinnitus from exposure to loud noise for a prolonged period of time.
It’s not only places like this where you should wear earplugs. If you are around washing machines, vacuums, and other household appliances all day that make high levels of noise, you should consider wearing them too.
Keep your stress levels down
Stress can make tinnitus worse. If you don’t already have tinnitus, you can try to keep your stress levels down to avoid developing it. When you are stressed, your whole body tenses up and reacts to this and this is why the noises can usually be heard loudest when you are stressed. Try taking up yoga to manage your stress, or think about taking part in some therapy if you are someone who gets stressed or wound up a lot.
Avoid any triggers
You need to identify and try to stay away from anything that would make tinnitus worse. Some people who already have tinnitus don’t hear it all the time, and it’s best to try and keep it this way. So, if you do have it and you know that it gets worse when you eat a certain food, or hear a certain noise, you are going to want to avoid doing these things. This can be helpful as it can keep the tinnitus at bay for as long as possible. Make a note of all of these things so that you can remember to stay away from them and this is going to be the easiest way to remember what all of your triggers are.
